Rainbow International Mobile Catastrophe Teams Back Home After Helping Hurricane Irene Recovery Efforts

September 13th, 2011 by Rainbow International

John and Kelly Wheeler

Two Mobile Catastrophe Response Teams representing Rainbow International have returned after helping home and business owners in North Carolina recover from Hurricane Irene.

John Wheeler, owner of Rainbow International of Greenville (South Carolina), dispatched two trucks and teams of restoration specialists to help recovery efforts along coastal North Carolina. His teams worked primarily in Greenville and New Bern. “We were fortunate that South Carolina missed the blunt of Hurricane Irene’s impact,” Wheeler said. “Our neighbors to the north weren’t so lucky and saw considerably more damage. While Hurricane Irene didn’t pack the punch forecasters originally called for, many home and business owners suffered damage and we were privileged to help start the recovery process.”

Hurricane Irene made landfall August 27 near Cape Lookout, NC as a Category 1 storm. She then raked up the East Coast, causing extensive flooding and wind damage from Virginia to New England. Current U.S. estimates attribute 45 deaths and $7 billion in property damage to Hurricane Irene.

“The majority of the damage we saw came from extensive flooding and high winds,” Wheeler added. “The hurricane also spawned a number of tornadoes that added to the destruction. We were able to complete emergency water extraction and drying for a number of homes and businesses.”

Rainbow International Mobile Catastrophe Response Teams have completed similar work in the past, including recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina (2005) in Louisiana and Mississippi and Hurricane Ike (2008) in Texas.

“We’re in the disaster recovery business to help as many people as we can.” Wheeler said. “Families want to get back in their homes as soon as possible. Businesses need to re-open their doors quickly. At Rainbow International, we don’t just restore homes and businesses; we restore value, stability, and peace of mind.”

Rainbow International offers water, fire, smoke and mold damage cleanup and restoration services. Wheeler has owned and operated Rainbow International since 1999. Rainbow International also serves Anderson, Spartanburg and Pickens counties and the surrounding area.

Rainbow International may be reached at (864) 242-6707 or visit rainbowintl.com/greenvillesc for more information or to schedule a service appointment.

Happy September!

September 1st, 2011 by Rainbow International

Can you believe it’s September? The year has really flown by. It must be the brutal summer heat most of the nation (and especially Texas) has endured.

While it’s still burning up outside, this time of year allows us time to pause and give a little early extra thanks to our customers. To the homeowners, business owners, property managers and insurance professionals that honor us with their trust: thank you.

What Rainbow International does helping families and business owners recover from water, fire, smoke and mold damage makes a real difference in peoples’ lives. We impact people in positive ways and start a cycle of goodwill and customer satisfaction that leads to long-term relationships.

As the calendar turns and we enter the last few months of 2011, remember the importance of pausing to breathe, focus and appreciate all the blessings around you that really count … family, friends, neighbors, coworkers and loved ones. When you stop to think about it, our blessings are innumerable.

The growing and dynamic Rainbow International team across the United States and Canada counts every customer amongst those blessings. Thank you for your trust, Happy September and enjoy the (unofficial) start of autumn!

Hurricane Preparation

August 30th, 2011 by Rainbow International

As Hurricane Irene recovery and restoration efforts begin in earnest, most thoughts focus on the here and now. However, swirling over distant Atlantic waters, Tropical Storm Katia breathes life and begins her trek into the unknown. A recently released National Weather Service five-day forecast for Tropical Katia bears eerily similarity to Hurricane Irene’s path.

While Tropical Storm Katia is far too distant to predict with certainty, the fact that another storm gathers so closely on the exiting heels of Hurricane Irene should give pause to coastal residents from South Texas to New England. Are you prepared for the next storm? The next hurricane? The next “big one,” like Andrew (1992) or Katrina (2005)? Hurricane preparation now is as simple as following a few easy steps.

  • Secure your home or business. Install permanent storm shutters for optimal best protection or board-up windows with. Masking tape does not protect windows from hurricane wind and debris.
  • Keep trees and shrubs around your home or business properly trimmed.
  • Clean blocked rain gutters and downspouts.
  • Prepare an emergency supply kit (items to consider include non-perishable food rations, bottled water, prescriptions medications, battery-operated radio, flashlight with extra batteries, first aid kit, personal sanitation items and cell phones and chargers)
  • Consider purchasing a generator for emergency power (closely follow all generator safety instructions)

This isn’t an inclusive list, but gives you a good start on hurricane preparation. For more information, visit the following websites, as well as your state/local emergency management agency.

National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration
Federal Emergency Management Agency
Federal Government Disaster Assistance
The American Red Cross
The Salvation Army

The time for disaster preparation, including hurricane disaster preparation, is now, before the storm. By taking time and steps to prepare, you’ll be better positioned to protect your home from whatever nature throws your way.

Hurricane Water Damage Tips

August 29th, 2011 by Rainbow International

If you’re one of the millions of home and business owners up and down the East Coast dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, these hurricane water damage tips may come in handy.

To reach your nearest Rainbow International service location, call (877) 896-0176 or search by zip/postal code at www.rainbowintl.com.

After such a disaster, it’s natural for many home and business owners to feel a sense of urgency and try to take on certain aspects of hurricane water damage jobs on their own. While certain actions can help, others are dangerous to life and property and can jeopardize and impede satisfactory future restoration.

Water damage mitigation, especially on this scale, is best performed by trained professionals with the right tools and technology to do the job. Other critical services provided by Rainbow during storm response include board-up, tarp-over, contents inventory and contents restoration of damaged homes and businesses.

Here are seven (7) things you can do to help mitigate hurricane water damage:

  • Turning off the main source of water (to contain/limit further damage)
  • Turning off electrical breakers in affected areas
  • Placing aluminum foil under furniture legs
  • Lifting draperies away from affected carpets and rugs
  • Pinning-up upholstered furniture skirts
  • Removing items from affected areas that can stain wet carpet and flooring
  • Quickly calling a professional and certified water damage restoration business

Here are three (3) things you should not do when faced with hurricane water damage:

  • Use a home vacuum cleaner or wet/dry vacuum to remove water
  • Place newspapers in traffic areas to step on
  • Walk on any affected flooring surface, especially carpet, more than necessary

By following a few simple tips after a hurricane water damage event, home and business owners can help mitigate current damage, minimize potential future additional damage and reduce overall job costs and time. Most importantly, it can also help reduce the risk of harm and injury to building occupants who, with good intentions but limited knowledge, try to mitigate hurricane water damage themselves.

Hurricane Irene Recovery

August 29th, 2011 by Rainbow International

“Hope is that thing with feathers that perches in the soul and sings the tune without the words and never stops. At all.” – Emily Dickinson

What’s left of Hurricane Irene may be lifting up and off the Canadian coast to swirl out over colder Atlantic waters and dissipate into the nothingness from which she came. But the millions of people dealing with her aftermath will long remember the days of anticipation and fear, the hours of her wrath and the months ahead as recovery efforts begin.

While not as ferocious a storm as originally predicted, many lives have been lost, many more injured, homes and businesses destroyed and livelihoods disrupted. Hurricane Irene recovery requires a combination of neighbors helping neighbors, communities banding together, state, local and non-profit aid. Recovery also requires the customer service, technical expertise and professional dedication shared by all locations in the Rainbow International® franchise owner network.

Making every effort to save lives and comfort the injured and displaced comes first. Our nation is blessed with first-responders who, as we speak, are doing their jobs with passion and perseverance. Our gratitude is with police, fire and EMT crews today and in the days ahead.

Once rescue efforts come to a close, the water damage cleanup and restoration specialists of Rainbow International stand poised to mobilize, move in and assist home and business owners in any way possible. Water damage mitigation, especially on this scale, is best performed by trained professionals with the right tools and technology to do the job. Other critical services provided by Rainbow during storm response include board-up, tarp-over, contents inventory and contents restoration of damaged homes and businesses.

To reach your nearest Rainbow International service location, call (877) 896-0176 or search by zip/postal code at www.rainbowintl.com.

Hurricanes come and go. Their wrath leaves scars and pains that take time to heal. The team at Rainbow International extends its sincerest wishes and prayers to the millions dealing with that which Hurricane Irene left behind. We stand beside those recovering, privileged to assist in any way we can.

Hurricane Preparation Tips

August 25th, 2011 by Rainbow International

As Hurricane Irene approaches the eastern seaboard of the United States at Category 3 strength (winds in excess of 115 MPH), residents from North Carolina to New England should review the following hurricane preparation tips from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

  • Make plans to secure your property. Permanent storm shutters offer the best protection for windows. A second option is to board up windows with 5/8” marine plywood, cut to fit and ready to install. Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
  • Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.
  • Be sure trees and shrubs around your home are well trimmed.
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters and downspouts.
  • Determine how and where to secure your boat.
  • Consider building a safe room.

While all concerns now should focus on preparation to protect life and property, Rainbow International offers services including water damage restoration and board-up and tarp-over and should your home or business experience hurricane damage.

Empathy In Restoration Industry Business Development

July 22nd, 2011 by Rainbow International

Last month the Harvard Business Review released results of a personality survey* administered to 1,000 salespeople. They sought an answer to the question: “What makes a superior salesperson or sales representative?” I found their answers intriguing, especially for those working in a sales capacity as business development associates in the restoration and cleaning industry.

The seven (7) key personality traits identified in this survey are:

(1)    Modesty
(2)    Conscientiousness
(3)    Achievement Orientation
(4)    Curiosity
(5)    Lack of Gregariousness
(6)    Lack of Discouragement
(7)    Lack of Self-Consciousness

While many of these traits seem self-evident in a good salesperson, others are outside the realm of general expectations. I encourage you to read the full article for more information.

To this mix I’ll add another trait that, based on my experience, is critical in successful business development associates, particularly to those working with insurance agents and adjusters in the restoration and cleaning industry: empathy.

Empathy is the ability to recognize and, to some degree, share the feelings of others. For the restoration and cleaning industry, this can mean successfully relating at an emotionally and psychologically compelling level with customers dealing with the shock and aftermath of a water, fire, smoke or mold disaster. As a restoration and cleaning services provider, the business development associate represents both insurance carriers and their policy-holders. The most successful amongst these possess the genuine empathetic ability to see, think and feel what their customers see, think and feel.

My own experiences as a sales representative and sales manager confirm this. Leading restoration and cleaning industry business development associates truly care about their customers. They take the time to listen and expend sincere effort to understand the challenges at hand. This is evident in pre-call planning, face-to-face interviews and service presentations leading to the successful completion of a job.

If you want to be a leading business development associate in the restoration and cleaning industry, ask yourself the following tough questions:

  • “How can the restoration and cleaning contractor I represent help solve my customers’ problems?”
  • “What is best for the customer?”
  • “Does everything I do, from emails to calls to presentations to deal-sealing handshakes, put the customer first?”

Exercise empathy. See, think and feel as your customers do and work towards becoming a leading restoration and cleaning industry business development associate. Above all, treat others as you would like to be treated and put your customers first.

Sincerely,

Rainbow International Service Professionals Help Driver of Burning Car on Busy California Highway

July 14th, 2011 by Rainbow International

Pictured are Service Professionals Blake Rodriguez and Vito Perez with Rainbow International of Sacramento. Blake and Vito helped a driver whose car caught fire on a busy California highway earlier this week.

Thank you for your bravery and concern for the people of the communities we serve, guys!

Read the actual thank-you email they received below and be sure to visit the “Real Life with Rainbow International” webpage at www.rainbowintl.com/reallife

Today my engine caught fire on Highway 50. Two gentlemen in one of your trucks pulled over to help. They called 911, had a fire extinguisher ready, got me a safe distance from the car and did not leave till the fire was out and the fire department needed a statement. In the chaos and state of mind I was in I did not get their names or a truck number but I wanted someone to know just how wonderful it was to have their help and calm in that situation. I am so thankful they were there and hope that if you can determine who they were you will extend my absolute gratitude to them. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, Rainbow International guys! Thank you for stopping, for being so kind to me and helping me to stay calm. God bless you!

Sierra O’Loughlin (Rancho Cordova, California)

Response from Rainbow International:
Dear Sierra: Thank you for your kind words! The service professionals that were able to help are Blake Rodriguez and Vito Perez with Rainbow International of Sacramento. We will certainly pass along your message to them. We’re grateful you are safe and that we were able to help. Everyone at Rainbow International works with a shared Code of Values and the first on that list is “treat others as we would like to be treated.” Take care and thank you again for sharing!
