Rainbow International and Waco Fire Station #11 Promote National Fire Prevention Week

October 12th, 2012 by Rainbow International

The job of a firefighter is very serious and often hazardous. Everyday firefighters put their lives on the line to keep their communities safe. In honor of Fire Prevention Month we took a trip to our local fire station to bring cupcakes, check out the station and let the firefighters know just how much we really appreciate them.

After visiting we realized just how awesome our firefighters truly are. They make sacrifices to protect our homes and families, and provide emergency services without a second thought. These acts of courage and compassion should not go unnoticed! Support your local fire station and the brave men and women who prevent and lessen the impact of tragedies from happening in the future.

Thank you to our local firefighters and all of those around the world who keep us safe!

The Biggest Hazard in Your Backyard: BBQ Fires

June 14th, 2012 by Rainbow International

Backyard grills and patio fireplaces are popular focal points in landscape and outdoor decorating schemes. Grills are the center for outdoor living during the warmer months, and are a great way to entertain guests during the weekends.

When you prepare your home for the Spring and Summer months it is important to do a safety check and tune-up all the gear you’ll be using during the new season.

During the warmer season people tend to use their outdoor patios and living areas up to 20 times a month; therefore, the risk for accidents highly increases. Most home fires that happen in the time between March and May are due to patio appliances not being properly inspected.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in 2005-2009, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 8,200 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues per year. These 8,200 fires caused an annual average of 15 civilian deaths, 120 civilian injuries and $75 million in direct property damage.

Here are some simple tips to make sure you are preventing a home fire:

  • Check grill for safety hazards. Gas connections should be checked for leaks by applying a soapy water solution. When applied, bubbles will form if gas is escaping.
  • Barbecue in an open outdoor space for ventilation purposes and always keep a fire extinguisher handy.
  • Don’t allow an accumulation of grease to occur by keeping your grill and burners clean – this greatly reduces the chances of a grease fire.
  • Never fight a grease fire with water – this will only cause the flames to flare up.

Following these important safety tips can ensure you an enjoyable, fire-free grilling season.

Happy September!

September 1st, 2011 by Rainbow International

Can you believe it’s September? The year has really flown by. It must be the brutal summer heat most of the nation (and especially Texas) has endured.

While it’s still burning up outside, this time of year allows us time to pause and give a little early extra thanks to our customers. To the homeowners, business owners, property managers and insurance professionals that honor us with their trust: thank you.

What Rainbow International does helping families and business owners recover from water, fire, smoke and mold damage makes a real difference in peoples’ lives. We impact people in positive ways and start a cycle of goodwill and customer satisfaction that leads to long-term relationships.

As the calendar turns and we enter the last few months of 2011, remember the importance of pausing to breathe, focus and appreciate all the blessings around you that really count … family, friends, neighbors, coworkers and loved ones. When you stop to think about it, our blessings are innumerable.

The growing and dynamic Rainbow International team across the United States and Canada counts every customer amongst those blessings. Thank you for your trust, Happy September and enjoy the (unofficial) start of autumn!

Protecting Children and Pets After a Home Fire

August 31st, 2011 by Rainbow International

It’s every parent’s nightmare: fire strikes your home. Of course, immediate response focuses on savings lives. Homes can be rebuilt; water, fire and smoke damage can be cleaned-up and restored. Lost lives cannot. However, once the flames are extinguished and it is safe to re-enter the home, families find must face the trauma of facing life after such a disaster.

Protecting children and pets after a home fire is critical. Please keep the following safety tips in mind as your family begins the restoration and rebuilding process.

Open Windows and Circulate Air

Opening the windows in your home after a fire (if weather permits) is a good first step towards airing out the structure and contents. If possible, use fans to help circulate the air. Do not use the home HVAC system (see below).

Empty Refrigerators and Freezers (if electricity is off)

Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to keep temperatures cold. An average refrigerator keeps perishables adequately cold for around four hours (if left unopened). Full freezers hold temperatures at or below freezing for up to two days (if left unopened).

If power is out to the home after the fire, empty all refrigerators and freezers. If you can store perishables in a neighbor’s house, make arrangements to do so. Items that must be kept below certain temperatures, like milk, spoil quickly. Meat, fish, poultry and eggs must be kept at or below 40F. Inside the closed-air environment of a sealed and hot refrigerator or freezer, many food items will deteriorate quickly, making them unsafe to consume.

Do Not Prepare or Consume Food (Including Canned Goods) Subjected to Heat

Throw away any food that was near the fire, including canned goods. Food exposed to fire (or that you think was close to the heat) may be damaged not only by the fire itself, but also by smoke residues and chemicals that were used to extinguish the fire. Canned or preserved (in jars) food may look safe from the outside, but inside may now harbor growing bacteria that were activated by the heat. Cracked cans and jars also leave the food inside unsafe.

Do Not Turn On Heating/Air Conditioning Systems

The home heating/air conditioning system will absorb smoke and soot residues from fire. Before turning on these systems after a fire, it is critical to allow fire and smoke restoration experts to thoroughly inspect HVAC systems and ducts. If smoke residue is found within, the HVAC system and accompanying ducts must be professionally cleaned and restored before use. To use it beforehand could lead to system damage and the further spread of smoke residues throughout the home or business.

Relocate Pets (Especially Birds) to a Clean Environment

It’s important to keep the pet members of our families in mind at this time, as well. Pets, due to their smaller size and higher respiratory rates, are especially vulnerable. Smoke inhalation (even after the fire is extinguished) can have serious adverse health effects on pets, especially birds.

As quickly as is safely possible, move pets to another location while fire and smoke damage cleanup and restoration by a certified contractor is performed.

Ash and soot residues can irritate and block lungs, hindering respiration. Gases from the fire (e.g., carbon monoxide and formaldehyde) can kill. Birds (including exotic pet birds like parrots, cockatoos and toucans) are especially vulnerable to smoke inhalation and can suffer and die after exposure to very small quantities of gas and residues (this is the reason canaries were used in mines to help alert miners to the presence of lethal underground gas).

Restoration and rebuilding after a fire is a trying process. By following these steps after a fire and smoke loss, homeowners and parents help by protecting children and pets after a home fire. This can help reduce at least one potential cause of stress in an already stressful time.

Empathy In Restoration Industry Business Development

July 22nd, 2011 by Rainbow International

Last month the Harvard Business Review released results of a personality survey* administered to 1,000 salespeople. They sought an answer to the question: “What makes a superior salesperson or sales representative?” I found their answers intriguing, especially for those working in a sales capacity as business development associates in the restoration and cleaning industry.

The seven (7) key personality traits identified in this survey are:

(1)    Modesty
(2)    Conscientiousness
(3)    Achievement Orientation
(4)    Curiosity
(5)    Lack of Gregariousness
(6)    Lack of Discouragement
(7)    Lack of Self-Consciousness

While many of these traits seem self-evident in a good salesperson, others are outside the realm of general expectations. I encourage you to read the full article for more information.

To this mix I’ll add another trait that, based on my experience, is critical in successful business development associates, particularly to those working with insurance agents and adjusters in the restoration and cleaning industry: empathy.

Empathy is the ability to recognize and, to some degree, share the feelings of others. For the restoration and cleaning industry, this can mean successfully relating at an emotionally and psychologically compelling level with customers dealing with the shock and aftermath of a water, fire, smoke or mold disaster. As a restoration and cleaning services provider, the business development associate represents both insurance carriers and their policy-holders. The most successful amongst these possess the genuine empathetic ability to see, think and feel what their customers see, think and feel.

My own experiences as a sales representative and sales manager confirm this. Leading restoration and cleaning industry business development associates truly care about their customers. They take the time to listen and expend sincere effort to understand the challenges at hand. This is evident in pre-call planning, face-to-face interviews and service presentations leading to the successful completion of a job.

If you want to be a leading business development associate in the restoration and cleaning industry, ask yourself the following tough questions:

  • “How can the restoration and cleaning contractor I represent help solve my customers’ problems?”
  • “What is best for the customer?”
  • “Does everything I do, from emails to calls to presentations to deal-sealing handshakes, put the customer first?”

Exercise empathy. See, think and feel as your customers do and work towards becoming a leading restoration and cleaning industry business development associate. Above all, treat others as you would like to be treated and put your customers first.

Sincerely,

Rainbow International Service Professionals Help Driver of Burning Car on Busy California Highway

July 14th, 2011 by Rainbow International

Pictured are Service Professionals Blake Rodriguez and Vito Perez with Rainbow International of Sacramento. Blake and Vito helped a driver whose car caught fire on a busy California highway earlier this week.

Thank you for your bravery and concern for the people of the communities we serve, guys!

Read the actual thank-you email they received below and be sure to visit the “Real Life with Rainbow International” webpage at www.rainbowintl.com/reallife

Today my engine caught fire on Highway 50. Two gentlemen in one of your trucks pulled over to help. They called 911, had a fire extinguisher ready, got me a safe distance from the car and did not leave till the fire was out and the fire department needed a statement. In the chaos and state of mind I was in I did not get their names or a truck number but I wanted someone to know just how wonderful it was to have their help and calm in that situation. I am so thankful they were there and hope that if you can determine who they were you will extend my absolute gratitude to them. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you, Rainbow International guys! Thank you for stopping, for being so kind to me and helping me to stay calm. God bless you!

Sierra O’Loughlin (Rancho Cordova, California)

Response from Rainbow International:
