How To Neutralize Skunk Odor

February 26th, 2013 by Rainbow International

Whew! What’s that smell? Is it you? No, can’t be. You smell like a skunk! Ever heard these words before? Hopefully you haven’t, but chances are you know at least one person that has or maybe you or your pet was sprayed. Regardless, you know how strong skunk odor is and just how difficult it is to get rid of.

You may never have a need for the following information; however, you might want to keep it around just in case.

Using tomato juice to remove skunk odor is an old wives’ tale that just does not work. Tomato juice only seems to work because at high doses of skunk spray the human nose quits smelling the odor (olfactory fatigue). When this happens, the tomato juice odor is the only detectable smell.

A person suffering olfactory fatigue to skunk spray will swear that the skunk odor is gone and was neutralized by the tomato juice. However, seek a second opinion! Asking someone else to take a whiff will readily confirm the tomato juice has not neutralized the skunk spray.

If your home has been skunked, or a pet has brought in the skunk smell, wash all sprayed clothes and fabrics immediately. The good news is that the odor will eventually go away, but may take several weeks.

To remove the scent, Rainbow International® Restoration and Cleaning recommends cleaning the area with a direct spray contamination containing a mixture of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (one quart) with ¼ cup baking soda and one teaspoon of liquid soap or dishwashing detergent if the affected area is durable and colorfast.

Treating fabrics with an additional mixture before your regular laundry detergent may help as well, and household cleaning sprays and products like Febreeze can be effective against skunk smell on furniture.

For buildings, decks, etc., we suggest using a solution of liquid laundry Clorox® bleach, 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water will work. CAUTION – THIS MAY BLEACH THE BUILDINGS, DECKS, ETC. Try it on a small area if bleaching may be a problem.

The bleach must come in contact with the spot where the secretion was sprayed, and repeated applications may be necessary for large amounts of skunk spray. It will not work for skunk spray that has drifted over a large area or is trapped in a house. Time and adequate ventilation will help in this case. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS ON PETS.

If home remedies aren’t working you might consider contacting a professional restoration firm that should be able to expedite the odor removal.

It’s National Pet Month – What Better Time to Get Rid of Carpet Odor?

May 7th, 2012 by Rainbow International

We all love our fuzzy friends like part of the family, but all pets have accidents every now and then. If you don’t clean them thoroughly, chances are your pet may return for another trip to that spot.

Today’s carpets have built-in protection against most spots and stains, making cleanup easy and quick, but as a carpet ages, this protection wears off, making removal of stains more difficult.

Pet urine can break through the protective finishes on brand new carpets, causing stains that are tough to get out.

The majority of odors that we are asked to remove are a result of pets that stay indoors. Today, it seems that homeowners leave their pets inside more then ever before.

The severity of these odors is often overlooked because homeowners become somewhat desensitized to the smell over time. However on humid days or when there is an attempt to sell the home, the odor may become very apparent.

Over-the-counter products that are sprayed or sprinkled onto the carpet will usually only mask the smell for a short period of time. These odors can successfully be removed; however, it takes professional-strength products to counteract the odor. In severe cases, the backing of the carpet has to be treated along with the sub floor.

Rainbow International has the training and the products for proper odor removal, oftentimes at a substantial savings over carpet replacement.

Party At Your Place?!

Superbowl Tips

Okay, so we are all aware that Super Bowl Sunday is quickly approaching us. This means you are likely to have people over for the traditional super bowl parties and you need to prepare! Everyone wants their house to look its best when they know people are on the way.  You don’t want people walking in, taking one look around and thinking you’re a slob, so here is what you need to do before your party.

Early in the week, you can start to do little things around the house so it won’t be such a daunting task when game day approaches. Pick up around the house; make sure there are no lingering odors to scare your guests away. (If you’re having trouble, of course Rainbow International is always here for you!) The kitchen and living room are likely to be the high activity areas, so get them presentable.

Aside from the cleaning, obviously you are going to need to hit the store. I secretly believe the reason people like the super bowl so much is just because it gives them an excuse to eat the deliciously-bad-for-you “football” food! Traditional menu items for the big day include nachos, pizza, burgers, hot dogs, varieties of chips and dips, chicken wings, and a selection of desserts.  Pick out the recipes you are going for and hit up your local grocery store. We all know the food can make or break the party, so choose your menu items wisely!

Now for the game day atmosphere. If you want to go all out, make an effort to set the mood. After all, we need the aura to be just right so our team will win!  Decorate the house in the colors of your favored team. Buy paper plates and silverware in the proper colors—make signs cheering on your team. These types of things are what helps people get excited about the game! It makes the atmosphere a lot more fun and exciting when people are putting their all into their team.

So now when the day comes, you will be ready. Your team has been preparing for it, and so have you.  As for the game, that’s out of your hands but at least you know you and all your guests are going to have a great time experiencing it together in your decked out home.
