Rainbow International of The Wiregrass Donates Time and Labor to Build Church

June 29th, 2012 by Rainbow International

For the first time in months a Dothan church is having its services in an actual building, thanks to $100,000 in donations from a Wiregrass business and volunteers.

Last year, the Clio Community Church was under construction when a storm and strong winds came through the town, destroying the entire structure. During the construction and after the heartbreaking setback, the congregation continued to hold their services under tents that hardly sheltered them from the sweltering southern heat.

Service professionals from the restoration and cleaning company Rainbow International® and other volunteers have spent more than two months building the congregation a brand new church.

Jason Cheshire, Jeff Mills and Justin Tolbert, co-owners of Rainbow International of the Wiregrass, saw their story in the news and wanted to help. Cheshire contacted Pastor Melvin White about reconstructing the church and enlisted more than 30 volunteers to take the remnants of the old church down and build it back.

“Pastor White just broke down in tears,” Cheshire said. “He couldn’t even continue the conversation on the phone.”

The pastor was in awe of the people who came to his church’s rescue.

“They didn’t even know us, and they came to help,” White said. “Numerous volunteers just showed up with saws, hammers, nails and other materials. They worked as long as we could come up with the material, and even donated some of it themselves.”

The crew worked sun up to sun down 10 Saturdays in a row without any pay for their manual labor. While most of the materials and supplies were resourced through insurance, the donated time and labor from Rainbow International and other volunteers would have cost more than $100,000 dollars.

“I know God had his hand in it, but if it weren’t for Jason I don’t know what we would have done,” White said. “I was almost ready to give up. We are so blessed to be where we are.”

While the congregation is having services in their new building, the inside is not yet finished. More donations and materials are needed for air conditioning, bathrooms and sheetrock.

The church is accepting donations, which can be sent to Clio Community Church P.O. Box 9941 Dothan, AL. 36304.

Simple Ways to Save Money On Your Electric Bill This Summer

June 21st, 2012 by Rainbow International

Today is the official first day of Summer, and we all know that the warmer months ahead bring higher electricity bills.

If the weather is going to be anything like last year we can expect soaring temperatures in some parts of the U.S.

There are several simple steps you can take to stay cool and save money:

  • Program the thermostat. Give the air conditioner a break during the work day. Shifting the settings to allow higher daytime temperatures could cut the average electric bill by $180 a year.
  • Clean, clean, clean. Clean air filters monthly for central air and individual window or wall units. Dirt and dust hinder air flow, reducing efficiency.
  • Close the blinds. Rooms get hotter without shades or curtains to block the sunlight, especially with south- and west-facing windows.
  • Use fans. A breeze makes the room feel a few degrees cooler. Just make sure to turn it off when you leave the room.
  • Avoid chores during the day. The hotter the space, the harder an air conditioner must work to keep things cool. Limit the use of appliances like the oven, dishwasher and clothes dryer when temperatures outside are hottest.

The Biggest Hazard in Your Backyard: BBQ Fires

June 14th, 2012 by Rainbow International

Backyard grills and patio fireplaces are popular focal points in landscape and outdoor decorating schemes. Grills are the center for outdoor living during the warmer months, and are a great way to entertain guests during the weekends.

When you prepare your home for the Spring and Summer months it is important to do a safety check and tune-up all the gear you’ll be using during the new season.

During the warmer season people tend to use their outdoor patios and living areas up to 20 times a month; therefore, the risk for accidents highly increases. Most home fires that happen in the time between March and May are due to patio appliances not being properly inspected.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in 2005-2009, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 8,200 home fires involving grills, hibachis or barbecues per year. These 8,200 fires caused an annual average of 15 civilian deaths, 120 civilian injuries and $75 million in direct property damage.

Here are some simple tips to make sure you are preventing a home fire:

  • Check grill for safety hazards. Gas connections should be checked for leaks by applying a soapy water solution. When applied, bubbles will form if gas is escaping.
  • Barbecue in an open outdoor space for ventilation purposes and always keep a fire extinguisher handy.
  • Don’t allow an accumulation of grease to occur by keeping your grill and burners clean – this greatly reduces the chances of a grease fire.
  • Never fight a grease fire with water – this will only cause the flames to flare up.

Following these important safety tips can ensure you an enjoyable, fire-free grilling season.
